Four Reasons you May Want to Choose Granite Countertops Over Others

If you are planning to get new countertops in your kitchen or bathroom, you may be considering granite. After all, granite countertops are the most popular materials used these days.

Here are reasons why you may choose this type of countertops:

They are Affordable

The actual cost of countertops made of granite varies based on some factors such as stone quality, slab origin, and your retailer. But, in general, a granite countertop will cost $75 per square foot. You may have to spend between $40 and $200 per square foot on fabricating and installing slabs. These numbers include the installation and fabrication costs. If you want to save money, try to avoid big box stores since they have a limited variety of stones and they contract out the work as cheaply as they possibly can. Rather, look for an independent retailer.

There are Many Colors to Choose From

Make sure to ask to see the actual slab to be used in making your countertops, instead of just a sample or a sample photo. Colors and patterns for granite greatly vary from slab to slab and you must pick the one that fits your kitchen. Don’t forget to look for obvious signs of weakness or damage.

They are Easy to Maintain

Granite will look great when you take care of them. While they are the most durable materials used in kitchens, they could look cheap after a few years when you don’t maintain them properly. Luckily, it is easy to care for them. In fact, you can just use warm, soapy water when cleaning them. But, ensure to seal them properly after installation to prevent moisture from seeping into the stone and leave permanent stains.

You can also use a cleaner made for granite countertops. You can find them online or at the majority of big hardware stores. Consider asking your fabricator may even give you some after they install your new countertops.

They can Mimic More Expensive Stones

Although granite cannot perfectly mimic the look of marble, it can come close. Marble is a beautiful stone that most homeowners seek after for their upscale kitchens and bathrooms. But, it is softer than granite so it is more prone to damage. But, you will want to have that beautiful marble look. Granite that looks like marble has a lower price tag and requires less maintenance. This means you will get more for your money.
